Position Summary

St. James Church & School is seeking a dependable, organized, and mission-minded Facilities Director to oversee the maintenance, cleanliness, safety, and operational readiness of all parish and school buildings and grounds. This position supervises the evening custodial crew responsible for classroom cleaning and ensures that all facilities provide a safe, clean, welcoming, and well-maintained environment for students, staff, parishioners, and visitors.

 This is a working supervisory position that includes hands-on maintenance responsibilities along with leadership of contracted custodial personnel.

 

Primary Responsibilities

Facilities Maintenance & Repairs
 • Oversee preventative, routine, and emergency maintenance for all church and school facilities
 • Perform routine to mid-level maintenance and repair work as needed
 • Monitor and coordinate maintenance of HVAC, plumbing, electrical, lighting, irrigation, fire safety, and security systems
 • Conduct regular inspections of buildings and grounds to identify maintenance and safety needs
 • Coordinate outside vendors, contractors, and repair services
 • Maintain maintenance schedules, equipment records, operating manuals, and inventories

 Custodial & Evening Crew Supervision
 • Train and supervise the evening custodial staff responsible for classroom and facility cleaning
 • Develop cleaning schedules and assign daily responsibilities
 • Ensure classrooms, offices, restrooms, worship spaces, cafeterias, and common areas are cleaned and prepared daily
 • Monitor cleaning quality standards and provide accountability

 Groundskeeping & Exterior Maintenance
 • Oversee lawn care, landscaping, parking lots, sidewalks, playgrounds, and exterior maintenance
 • Coordinate seasonal work including snow removal, leaf removal, and irrigation maintenance
 • Ensure grounds remain safe, attractive, and welcoming year-round
 Safety & Security
 • Help maintain compliance with health, safety, and facility regulations
 • Respond to alarms, emergencies, and facility issues as needed
 • Assist with emergency preparedness procedures
 • Coordinate annual inspections and safety reviews
 • Ensure proper building security and after-hours procedures

 Event & Ministry Support
 • Assist with setup and cleanup for church services, school events, meetings, weddings, funerals, and parish activities
 • Coordinate room arrangements and facility readiness for all events

 Budget & Administrative Responsibilities
 • Assist with maintenance budgeting and expense tracking
 • Obtain bids and oversee vendor contracts
 • Verify work completion and contractor invoicing
 • Maintain inventory of tools, supplies, and equipment

 

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required
 • Minimum 5 years of facilities, maintenance, or custodial experience preferred
 • Previous supervisory experience strongly preferred
 • Working knowledge of building systems including HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and custodial operations
 • Ability to diagnose and complete routine maintenance repairs
 • Strong communication, organizational, and leadership skills
 • Ability to work independently and prioritize multiple responsibilities
 • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and basic technology systems
 • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and work from ladders and lifts
 • Availability for occasional evenings, weekends, and emergency calls
 • Ability to work collaboratively within a church and school environment
