FIRST LEGO Challenge Team Headed to Kokomo Qualifying Tournament
St. James students, in grades 4-8, have been working together to prepare for their first qualifying tournament in Kokomo, this Saturday. Our students have prepared weekly together to build, program, problem solve, strengthen teamwork, and imagine possibilities. They will showcase their efforts this weekend. It will be an all day event, and we wish them all the best to showcase their talents. We pray their light shines for all to see, and are certain they will be wonderful representatives of St. James Lutheran School.
What is FIRST® LEGO® League?
FIRST® LEGO® League introduces science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) to children ages 4-16* through fun, exciting hands-on learning. Participants gain real-world problem solving experience through a guided, global robotics program, helping today’s students and teachers build a better future together.
Our three divisions inspire youth to experiment and grow their critical thinking, coding, and design skills through hands-on STEM learning and robotics.
CHALLENGE Division
FIRST LEGO League Challenge is a research and robotics tournament for 9-16-year-old students. It combines the fun of technology and science with the exciting atmosphere of a sports event. Challenge makes it easier for children and young people to access scientific subjects and to awaken their motivation to learn an engineering or IT profession at an early age.
In a team, the participants work for several weeks like real engineers on a joint project. They plan, program and test a fully automatic robot, do research on a topic of their choice and create a presentation of their results.
FIRST LEGO League Challenge annually gives the teams new challenges and thus has a lasting impact on the development of various skills – throughout several years. The students gain valuable practical experience with complex technologies and improve their problem-solving skills – all with a lot of fun and imagination!
FIRST LEGO League Challenge teams prepare all season to compete at regional tournaments, where judges provide valuable feedback on their robot, code, and invention. The final test of their work comes at the Robot Game table, where they race against the clock for a personal best score and the chance to advance to a local championship. Some teams earn an invitation to FIRST Championship, where teams from all over the world meet and compete.
As stated on the website:
The Future is Yours to Create
Lights, camera, STEAM! Science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM) inspire big ideas, bold action – and creativity. Our skills make it possible to create art and experiences that bring us together, entertain us, and move us. During our 2023-2024 arts-inspired robotics season, FIRST® IN SHOWS presented by Qualcomm, we will celebrate the roles our STEM skills play in the arts and design and build a world of endless possibilities.
In the 2023-2024 MASTERPIECES challenge, FIRST® LEGO® League students will imagine and innovate new ways to create and communicate art across the globe.
